THE ISSUE ON THE TABLE

Annually, at least 14 millions tons of plastic are disposed into the ocean.

Plastic makes up 80% of all marine debris.

Plastic can be found on every shore of every continent, especially tourist areas.

HOW IT AFFECTS THE WORLD

IMPACTS ON THE ECOSYSTEM

Marine animals mistake plastic as prey; they consume and ingest plastic, causing detrimental effects to their health.

Floating plastic transports invasive marine species from other places, impacting the food chain.

IMPACTS ON HUMANS

Microplastic, which is known to have a negative influence on human health, can now be found in every ocean.

Several chemicals contained in these plastics interfere with immune systems, endocrine systems, etc.

IMPACTS ON CLIMATE CHANGE

Incarceration of plastic materials release carbon dioxide into the air, fueling climate change.

COVID-19 EFFECTS

POSITIVE

  • Beaches and former tourist locations significantly improved after the lockdown.

  • More marine animals were seen near the shore, such as whales, dolphins, and fish.

NEGATIVE

  • Plastic usage increased after the pandemic, causing more trash to be thrown into the water.

  • Plastic bottles, along with one-use masks and gloves, were more frequently used.

HOW YOU CAN HELP
